Using fine-grit sandpaper, horsetail (tokusa), or charcoal ink, gently polish the sabi-urushi surface while applying water. Avoid rubbing too hard, as excessive force may distort the shape. Carefully check the surface condition and uneven areas while polishing gradually and delicately.
If lines or contours become distorted after polishing, use carving tools to refine and correct the shape. Pay special attention to edges and corners, as they are easily damaged or deformed. Adjust the form while observing the overall balance of the piece.
Finally, wipe away any polishing residue, dirt, and moisture thoroughly with a soft cloth.
Rust polishing is an important process used to smooth the surface and correct unevenness or distortion through wet polishing.
