Modern vs. Traditional: The Essence of Kintsugi

kintsugiparis

*Kintsugi* has become widely recognized as a beautiful method for repairing broken ceramics. However, today, there are two fundamentally different approaches: “Modern (Simplified) *Kintsugi*” and “Traditional *Hon-Urushi Kintsugi*.”

While they may appear similar at a glance, there are significant differences in the materials used, the complexity of the process, and, most importantly, their safety for daily use.

What is Modern (Simplified) Kintsugi?

Modern *Kintsugi* is a quick repair method that uses synthetic adhesives, epoxies, and putties. It is designed to be completed in a short amount of time.

While it offers an accessible and affordable way to repair objects, the materials used are often not food-safe. Consequently, this method is primarily suited for decorative items intended for display only.

Why it is not suitable for food use

The synthetic resins used in simplified *Kintsugi* are formulated for strength and convenience, rather than safety for consumption. Many are not certified as food-safe materials.

These chemicals can react to heat, acidity, or alcohol, potentially leaching trace substances depending on the environment. Furthermore, as these synthetic materials degrade over time, they may lose their integrity, making them unsuitable for long-term contact with food.

What is Traditional Hon-Urushi Kintsugi?

Traditional *Hon-Urushi Kintsugi* follows ancient Japanese techniques using only natural *Urushi* lacquer. This is the authentic craft that has endured for centuries.

The process is meticulous, involving repeated cycles of drying and polishing that can take several months to complete. It requires immense patience, time, and the skilled hands of a dedicated artisan.

Safe for daily dining

Once natural *Urushi* has fully cured and hardened, it becomes an incredibly stable and durable material. One of its greatest virtues is that it is entirely food-safe, allowing you to use your repaired tableware with peace of mind every day.

Beyond Repair: Creating New Value

Traditional *Hon-Urushi Kintsugi* is more than just a repair. Instead of “hiding” the scars, we “highlight” them as a form of beauty, bestowing a renewed sense of value upon the piece.

It is an act of breathing new life into an object, preserving its history and memories while weaving a new story into its future.
